Leeds United may be counting their lucky stars after one of their January targets has seen his price tag slashed ahead of the summer, by a generous £2.5million.

Leeds United were linked with a handful of players during the January transfer window, though in the end no new faces joined the first-team for the promotion push.

Only young goalkeeper Robbie Cook signed for Leeds United but he’s playing with the development team at first.

Nonetheless, Daniel Farke’s side still look in good nick and many are backing Leeds United to win the Championship title this season, with a game against Sunderland on Monday night set to be a crucial turning point in the season.

Should Leeds earn promotion to the Premier League then Farke and the Leeds United owners will have plenty of work to do in the summer transfer window, with the squad currently lacking the depth required to compete in the top flight.

Namely, Leeds will need to add at least one new centre-back, with that position looking lighter than any other right now.

Leeds United handed seven-figure Nico Elvedi boost

One of the many centre-backs linked with Leeds United in January was Borussia Monchengladbach’s Nico Elvedi. Farke was and remains keen on a reunion with the 56-cap Swiss international, who was previously reported to be valued at £10million by the Bundesliga outfit.

Now though, an emerging report from TeamTalk has revealed that Monchengladbach now want just £7.5million for the 28-year-old. The same report also goes on to reveal that Elvedi is keen to secure a summer move ‘to a Premier League or top European club’, meaning promotion for Leeds could put them in pole position to sign Elvedi.

So far in 2024/25, Elvedi has featured 15 times in the Bundesliga, with his side currently sitting in 8th place of the table and just one point outside the European places.

Elvedi will surely know of Leeds’ interest by now, whether there’s been contact or not. But previous reports revealed that Elvedi was ready to wait until the summer before deciding on his future, with the likes of Wolves also interested.

Wolves sit just two points and a place above the drop zone in the Premier League. Them trading places with Leeds in the standings would of course be a huge boost for the latter, as is Monchengladbach dropping their asking price.

Should Leeds secure promotion then they’d have their newfound Premier League millions which could fund moves for Elvedi and several others in the summer transfer window.
