Leeds United are poised to sign Sean Longstaff in a £15million deal from Newcastle United, after the Magpies pushed up the price for their academy graduate.

Leeds United have wanted Sean Longstaff for a long time now. Over a year in fact with Daniel Farke’s side first being linked with the Newcastle United favourite ahead of last summer’s transfer window.

But following promotion to the Premier League last season, and with Longstaff down the pecking order and out of contract in 2026, Leeds have managed to get a deal for the 27-year-old almost over the line.

Reports state that Leeds United have agreed a deal to sign Longstaff after seeing their opening bids rejected by Newcastle United.

It’s understood that Leeds were initially offering £12million for the Englishman. But in the end, Leeds and Newcastle United have agreed a £15million fee for Longstaff, whose arrival at Elland Road seems like a matter of time.

Sean Longstaff’s 2024 price tag proves Leeds United have got a good deal

Although he’s out of contract in 2026, Longstaff is a player with bags of quality and experience: just a few years ago, Longstaff was linked with a £50million move to Manchester United, then going on to impress in Champions League games against the likes of PSG with Newcastle United.

But when Leeds and also Leicester City were being linked with a move for Longstaff last summer, reports at the time revealed how Newcastle were commanding £20million for Longstaff.

So Leeds coming in at £12million this summer, then settling for £15million in the end, may show that it is in fact Leeds United who’ve got the best deal here, and not Newcastle United as many might have thought after rejecting Leeds’ opening bids.

How much do Leeds United have left to spend on transfers after Sean Longstaff?

Leeds’ spending hasn’t been extortionate this summer. Instead, Farke seems to be managing his spending on players to ensure that he has enough money to bring in all the players he needs, with Leeds still having quite a few problem positions across the pitch.

So far, Leeds have signed Jaka Bijol for £15million, Gabriel Gudmundsson for £10million, and Sebastiaan Bornauw for £5million. With Longstaff set to arrive for £15million, it leaves the Whites with £105million for the remainder of the window, following previous reports that Leeds have a £150million transfer budget this summer.

Leeds now look set to sign Anton Stach as well, in a deal that’ll cost £17million, so really, Leeds still have about £90million to spend, with increasing reports that the club are readying a bumper offer for Feyenoord’s £30million-rated winger Igor Paixao too.
