Leeds United defeated Wolverhampton Wanderers 3-1 on Saturday and Troy Deeney has selected one player in his Team of the Week for the BBC.

The Leeds United goals came from a fantastic header from Dominic Calvert-Lewin, an outstanding Anton Stach free-kick, and via Noah Okafor slotting into the corner on the counter-attack.

Just a day before the game, some Leeds fans wanted Stach dropped vs Wolves before the midfielder stepped up with two huge moments and a goal and an assist for Okafor’s swift breakaway. He won the Player of the Match vote, too.

Stach was even teasing Wolves pre-match and he was the pick of the bunch for Leeds’ match ratings against Wolves, with Leeds tearing their opposition to pieces during the opening 45 at Molineux.

Anton Stach named in BBC Sport’s Team of the Week

Stach was part of a statement Leeds win at Molineux where Leeds set records against Wolves but so did the German midfielder, with Stach breaking a 22-year wait for Leeds by bagging a sublime free-kick and goal of the season contender.

Stach sent a hilarious Leeds message post-Wolves and the giant midfielder was outstanding in dictating the game both in and out of possession for Daniel Farke’s side.

That said, the strike was the major talking point overall, especially as no Leeds player had scored a direct free-kick for over a year. Troy Deeney has even included the midfielder in his Team of the Week for the BBC.

Deeney has changed his view of Farke after Wolves but he also included a second German connected to Leeds as their only other squad or staff member in the side.

Speaking via BBC Sport, he said: “He gets in because Leeds have been flying and I’ve struggled to put anyone else in. He scored a worldie against Wolves which helps.

“Stach has been impressive since coming in at Leeds. I’ve watched a couple of their games — high energy, high tempo. He’s a very physical, very demanding player.”

Daniel Farke’s view of Anton Stach vs Wolves

Speaking to LUTV after Leeds’ first away maximum of the season, Farke was full of praise for Stach after a dominant display.

Farke said: “[It was an] excellent, excellent finish from Anton Stach. And also the third goal out of a good transition moment, once we were spot-on in our pressing.

“Anton played the ball exactly in the right moment, good timing of the run from Noah, and then the excellent ice-cold finish.

“I’m happy for my offensive players that they delivered today, scored goals. Noah’s first goal, Dominic off the mark, Anton… an impressive start in the Premier League.

“But also another goal and another assist, so I’m pretty happy for my players and definitely a good feeling today.”
