Troy Deeney makes Daniel Farke U-turn after claiming Leeds United would sack him

Troy Deeney has changed his mind somewhat on Daniel Farke after Leeds United beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 3-1 at Molineux.

Leeds United had three new signings to thank for their 3-1 victory, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Anton Stach, and Noah Okafor completing the comeback victory after Vitor Pereira’s side opened the scoring.

That trio of goalscorers meant Leeds set new club records against Wolves but it was a game they had to dig in for towards the end, with Leeds sat deep and looking to hit Wolves in transition on the counter-attack.

Wolves remain without a single point, which meant Farke overcame a poor managerial record against Wolves heading into Saturday’s game. His Leeds side now have seven points from five games.

Despite it not being a perfect performance, as Farke was frustrated with one Leeds player vs Wolves, there are numerous positives to take and it’s a first away in the Premier League since March 2023 (also against Wolves).

BBC pundit Troy Deeney picks Daniel Farke as his Manager of the Week

It was a special day which saw Anton Stach break a 22-year wait for Leeds against Wolves. However, there are still Farke doubters and skeptics regarding his long-term suitability to a relegation battle with Leeds.

Troy Deeney was most confident Leeds would be relegated out of the promoted trio. In fact Deeney thinks Sean Dyche could replace Farke at some stage this season.

Stylistically, Deeney has been concerned about Leeds under Farke in the top flight compared to their dominant nature in the Championship.

In fact, Deeney believes Farke would be the first sacking. That was back in mid-August and has already aged poorly after Nuno Espirito Santo was relieved of his duties for Nottingham Forest.

He said: “Daniel Farke [first to be sacked]. They got promoted last year, and Farke didn’t even celebrate because he thought he was getting the sack. There was lots of talk about whether he was going to be kept.

“There will be so much pressure from the fanbase to deliver, I don’t think they will sit around. If they have a bad start, they won’t wait until November — they’ll get rid of him.”

Now, speaking in BBC Sport’s Team of the Week, Deeney has changed his view. He picked Farke as the manager for this week and said: “Probably the only time I’m going to give it to him.

“I put him up as one of those managers that might get the sack because of the way it ended last year. I have to say I 100% got it wrong. Wonderful win against Wolves away from home after going a goal down. He’s got his Leeds side fighting and trying to stay up.”

Daniel Farke’s Premier League record after Wolves 1-3 Leeds United

Of course, it’s somewhat difficult to compare Leeds and Norwich City regarding their approaches to the Premier League and recruitment, but Farke still has a disappointing record overall in the top flight.

It’s not altogether surprising that Deeney held the view he had at the time, even if it has since aged poorly. Farke’s record compared to his Championship one is night and day.

Leeds have to continue to build on this strong start for both points and performances thus far.
