Now speaking on Sky Sports’ Soccer Saturday, Merson believes Leeds have got the right credentials for promotion, but more specifically how James is above Championship level.
“They’ve got the firepower,” Merson said.
“They’ve got James, who’s miles too good for this league.”

It’s clear the 27-year-old is too good for this level, and it shows.
19 goal involvements in 29 games is exactly what Leeds were missing from the winger last season, as James is only one behind equalling his total in the last campaign.
The Welshman’s contract expires in 2026, and there is no doubt he will garner interest, but James is very happy at Leeds.
This should spring the 49ers into action, as a new contract is ready and waiting for James, as it seems he is firmly a part of the Whites’ future.
Although Struijk is ‘first’ for a Leeds contract, James should follow closely behind.
