Leeds United are famed for their ability to produce and develop young talent, with a clear pathway to the first-team a part of the fabric of the club for decades now.

Given Leeds United’s vast financial resources, there was always likely to be something of an aggressive approach to building their squad in the hope of making their latest EFL stint a brief one this season, but academy products were still utilised.

Daniel Farke, like many before him, was happy to use the likes of Archie Gray, Pascal Struijk, and Crysencio Summerville. Now, Harry Gray is the latest off the conveyor belt of young talent emerging from the club in recent years.

Famously, Leeds have tended to afford their young players opportunities, from both the Gray brothers in recent seasons, to the likes of James Milner, Kalvin Phillips, Fabian Delph, Jonny Howson, Lewis Cook, and Jonathan Woodgate in the not-so distant past as well.

Leeds United fans rage over Finlay Gorman decision

Thorp Arch has been praised by experts of late, but Leeds’ famous and prestigious academy continues to churn out talent, with Rhys Chadwick the latest to come out of Thorp Arch and join the Grays.

But, quite clearly, Harry Gray is the ‘prized jewel’ of Leeds’ academy currently. In fact, so much so that Gray has been named by The Guardian in their ‘Next Generation’ list.

It’s often a sign of a supremely gifted player, with Leeds looking to hang onto Gray after losing Oliver Boast to Tottenham Hotspur and Finlay Gorman to Man City in recent seasons.

The latter is a player Leeds fans are frustrated about, having also been named on the list. They took to X (formerly Twitter) to react to that fact now that he is in City’s set-up.

Another response from @leedsnoinfidel read: “He deadass would be getting first team mins if he stayed. Dumbass.”

Another reply read: “So sure his progression with us would’ve been much better.”

Another Leeds fan in the quote posts said: “This p—– me off SO much.”

Gorman, per Transfermarkt, has 12 goals and 10 assists in 32 games for Man City’s U-18 team. He is a box-to-box or attacking midfielder as well. Man City beat Newcastle United to Gorman’s signature.

Gorman follows a long line of Leeds youngsters out of Thorp Arch, even if Gray is likely to be retained.

A number of players to be named on the list have gone on to have excellent careers at club and international level, which is what is now expected of the 17-year-old.

The Guardian’s verdict on Finlay Gorman

The Guardian’s report on Gorman reads as follows from Jamie Jackson: “Joining City for a reported record £5m deal from Leeds United in 2023, Gorman can operate across midfield.

“As one of the younger Under-18s last season, he made 28 appearances in all competitions and they featured 21 goal involvements. Scored a hat-trick against West Brom in the FA Youth Cup in February.

“And said afterwards: ‘I’m buzzing with it, it’s about time. It’s my first hat-trick with the Under-18s. I actually can’t recall scoring any other hat-tricks.’

“Made his England Under-18 debut in September and provided an assist in his second game as the side clinched the Costa de la Luz international tournament.”

Gorman claims he will ;always be grateful’ to Leeds for giving him his opportunity, but they will not reap the rewards of developing him if he becomes the superstar he is expected to be.
