Finlay Gorman will complete a move to Manchester City from Leeds United in a deal that could go north of £5m despite a lack of news of late – with the Premier League checking the record transfer.

That is according to Phil Hay, who told The Square Ball this week that 15-year-old Gorman‘s move to Manchester City will still go through. He said over a week ago that a deal was agreed, on The Athletic.

But nothing has hit the headlines over the last few days, following the reports from Hay that Gorman was joining City. However, nothing has hit the skids but merely, the Premier League are checking a deal.

That is because of Gorman’s age and the complexity of a deal for a player this young, and given the size of the fee agreed – according to Hay. The Athletic reporter says Tottenham and Liverpool were keen.

“Gorman is going to Manchester City. It is going to happen, it needed Premier League checks – which needed to happen. He is only 15. Leeds think this is a British transfer record for a player of his age.

“These are long-term add-ons. They might not, but it could earn £5m+. He made it clear he wanted to go. Other clubs were interested – Spurs and Liverpool. They see him as a generational talent,” Hay said.

Phil Hay says Finlay Gorman will complete Manchester City move

Hay makes the point that despite the pathway into the first team at Leeds being pretty clear as day, in the form of Archie Gray, it was always going to be difficult to turn down – for Gorman, to join Man City.

But surely, sticking around at Leeds for a few years and then breaking into the side would have given Gorman the perfect platform to make good on his already huge potential? Instead, he is now at City.

Having already played in the U18 side, it will be interesting to see if he will play for City’s 18’s or 21’s over the course of the next few months, or at any point this season. Certainly, it is a real signal of intent.
