Leeds United and Liverpool are two historic football clubs with academy graduates galore from Thorp Arch and the world famous Axa Melwood facility.

Leeds United have already announced plans for Elland Road to get a 49ers revamp but Thorp Arch training ground has already undergone one in recent years.

Leeds’ famous academy continues to churn out talent, with Rhys Chadwick the next to come out of Thorp Arch after the likes of Harry Gray.

A 16-year-old James Milner came through the Thorp Arch ranks and into the first-team to score before turning 17. However, the facilities have not always been as excellent as they are now.

Leeds United praised for Thorp Arch development

The Athletic are calling the improvement of various training grounds an “arms race” in English football. Their importance has grown to the point where they are a yardstick in how a club is measured and they have become essential to attracting new players.

They add that they are often provided with video tours of these complexes before they join. And it was a “key factor in Florian Wirtz’s decision to move to Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer”.

He had a session at the Liverpool’s Kirkby complex the day after playing a Champions League tie at Anfield last November. The superb setup made a lasting impression on the German star.

The report outlines that Leeds have been one of the clubs setting a precedent in some capacity, much like Liverpool. That’s because attention to detail is so advanced that even the layout of the canteen is crucial.

The example given is when Design Tonic helped Leeds with changes at their Thorp Arch training centre, with zoned seating introduced, alongside an integrated open-plan ‘nutrition zones’ area and smart acoustics to support communication.

Then there was bespoke flooring used in the changing rooms, while functional training zones were set up in the gym. Finally, communal areas were revamped to include comfortable seating and natural lighting.

The aspect Leeds have set an example to others on to change is the fact that football staff were heavily involved with the layout, which the report states is a major shift from a decade or so ago.

Amanda Cook, the founder of Design Tonic, said: “The staff are key to a successful design. They are the ultimate users and understand the flow.”

The Whites are very proud of their prestigious academy and Harry Gray is the ‘prized jewel’ of Leeds currently.

Gray is expected to pen fresh terms at Leeds anytime now, amid Spurs, Man City, Aston Villa, and Newcastle United interest in the 17-year-old starlet.

Gray has been honoured by The Guardian in their Next Generation list. He was named alongside Finlay Gorman of Man City, who was signed from Leeds in recent seasons.

Previous Man City players named include: Stephen Mfuni, Matty Warhurst, Joel Ndala, Luca Barrington, Luke Mbete, Oscar Bobb, Tommy Doyle, Ivan Ilic, Jadon Sancho, Demeaco Duhaney, and Tosin Adarabioyo.
