The January deadline is now just six days away and Leeds United are yet to make any new signings despite Daniel Farke suggesting last week The Whites could do with three new additions.
Daniel Farke began the window by saying he expected a quiet window at Leeds. But last week, Farke said he would like three signings in the form of a new no.10, another striker and cover at centre-back.
Pascal Struijk could return to face Cardiff on Saturday and that lessens the need for a new centre-back. But with Max Wober’s knee issues and Struijk’s injury history, the need for more depth remains at Leeds.
Competition for Brenden Aaronson has been a priority all season, with Leeds failing to replace Georginio Rutter in the summer. Patrick Bamford is injured and Joe Gelhardt has left, leaving Leeds light up top.
Jon Newsome wants Leeds to sign two new attacking players
Monday night saw Leeds and Burnley play out a bore-draw, with Dan James producing the only shot on target. Leeds lacked the precision to cut open a defence that have only conceded nine goals all season.
Speaking to BBC Radio Leeds after the match, former Leeds defender Newsome urged the club to make two new signings before the deadline – using last season’s Southampton as an example in his verdict.
“Ideally, I think you’d like to bring a 10 in and a no.9. I just think we’re light in that department. If Joel Piroe gets injured, at the moment Patrick Bamford is out, you’re then relying on Mateo Joseph. That’s it.
“Look at the teams in and around promotion over the last four or five seasons, look at Southampton who beat Leeds to it, they had four or five strikers. That’s an area they need to look at, definitely a 9 and a 10.”
The latest names linked with a move to Leeds United
The biggest name to be linked with Leeds in the last few days is a former England international. Leeds are said to be interested in Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who wants to return to England after a spell at Besiktas.
Leeds face competition from Wolves and Leicester for the former Liverpool and Arsenal man’s signature. Elsewhere, Leeds have been linked with striker Willem Geubbels from Isaac Schmidt’s old side St. Gallen.
Reports said Leeds were closing in on the signing of Kelechi Iheanacho from Victor Orta’s Sevilla, but Graham Smyth has rubbished any chance of signing Iheanacho. The next few days will tell us more.
