The January transfer window is now inside the final fortnight and Leeds United are yet to make any new additions, while the club’s rivals for automatic promotion have been hard at work.

Burnley have added Jonjo Shelvey after already signing Ashley Barnes and Oliver Sonne, while the signing of Enzo Le Fee at Sunderland have left Leeds fans worried. Chris Wilder is planning a January overhaul.

Indeed, Wilder has added Ben Brereton Diaz and is planning to bring in five signings in total this month. Leeds meanwhile, are yet to move despite injuries to both Pascal Struijk and Patrick Bamford of late.

The Whites have been reduced from four available strikers to two at the moment, while Struijk’s injury is seeing Ethan Ampadu drop into defence. Daniel Farke said Ampadu playing in defence is not long-term.

Leeds United now eyeing Isaac Schmidt’s old teammate

Leeds did a deal to sign Isaac Schmidt from Swiss side St. Gallen in the summer for £4.6m, and now they could raid the Europa Conference League side for a second time – by signing striker Willem Geubbels.

According to The Lower Tiers on X, Leeds are now battling Sheffield United and Burnley in the race to sign the French striker before the close of play on February 3. He has been in decent form this season.

They report: “Leeds, Burnley and Sheffield United are weighing up moves for St. Gallen striker Willem Geubbels. Eight goal involvements in 13 Swiss Super League games, the 23-year-old has impressed.”

In his 23 appearances, the former Monaco ace has scored nine goals and laid on two assists. Geubbels has 19 goals and seven assists in his 74 appearances for St. Gallen, 49 of which came alongside Schmidt.

Geubbels once cost a whopping £17.5m, at just 16 years of age

Coming through at Lyon, Geubbels played four times for Lyon’s first team before Monaco made a big-money move for the France U19 international in the summer of 2018 – costing Monaco a fee of £17.5m.

But things have not gone to plan for Geubbels since. One goal in 17 games for Monaco, three goals in 26 games on loan at Nantes and a failure to live up to the hype saw him join St. Gallen on a free transfer.

Monaco’s cash wasted. But, there is a reason why they spent that amount of cash and now, Schmidt’s old striker could finally realise that potential in the Championship with Leeds among the clubs interested.
