Leeds United are yet to make a single new signing in the January window but the club’s rivals for automatic promotion are working hard to bring in reinforcements, and Burnley are the latest to do so.
Chris Wilder said over the weekend that Sheffield United are planning on making five signings, and were close to three additions. On Monday, Sheffield United completed the loan signing of Ben Brereton Diaz.
The Blades have also been linked with midfielder Hamza Choudhury and even Everton defender Michael Keane, as they eye a replacement for Harry Souttar. Souttar is out for the season due to an achilles injury.
Leeds fans were left worried when Sunderland added Enzo Le Fee while Burnley have brought in Oliver Sonne and Turf Moor favourite Ashley Barnes. Scott Parker’s Burnley have also bid for Morgan Whittaker.

Burnley make another January signing with England international
Now, Burnley have added another new addition in the form of England international Jonjo Shelvey until the end of the season. A player with Championship promotion and even six England caps to his name.
The last 18 months have seen Shelvey play his football in Turkey. During 2023-24, the former Newcastle and Liverpool midfielder had a hand in 10 goals during 33 appearances for Turkish side Caykur Rizespor.
Then this season, he has been with another SuperLig side in the form of Eyupspor, but has managed just six appearances. With his contract cancelled earlier this month, Burnley have swooped to sign Shelvey.
Leeds United eyed Jonjo Shelvey in Daniel Farke’s first summer
Shelvey’s past form in the Championship is impressive, having a hand in 28 goals during 70 second-tier appearances with the likes of Newcastle. He remains known for his long-raking passes in central midfield.
It is a quality that Daniel Farke wanted to bring to Leeds in the summer of 2023. Indeed, Leeds wanted to sign Shelvey 18 months ago, but nothing materialised and the midfielder hopped on the plane to Turkey.
Now, Shelvey could end up facing the side he might have joined in the race for Championship promotion. Indeed, Leeds take on Burnley next Monday and it might be that Shelvey features for his new side then.
