With 20 games left to go in the Championship season, Leeds United remain top of the table as England’s second tier gets going once again this weekend after a pause for FA Cup action.

But two successive draws in which Leeds have surrendered leading positions to Blackburn and then Hull City has seen the lead at the top dwindle to just a point. Burnley and Sheffield United are close to Leeds.

In fourth, Sunderland are only three behind Leeds with the four sides seemingly entering a mini battle for the top two positions. Sheffield United are expected to sign Ben Brereton Diaz and Hamza Choudhury.

Burnley have signed Oliver Sonne and Ashley Barnes, while Sunderland’s addition of Enzo Le Fee has left Leeds fans worried. The Whites are yet to make any significant inroads in terms of January incoming.

Burnley eye big Championship statement with Morgan Whittaker

Scott Parker’s side are looking to close the gap on Leeds further by landing one of the Championship’s best young players. Fabrizio Romano says Burnley have tabled a bid for Plymouth’s Morgan Whittaker.

Rated at £10m, Whittaker was one of the Championship’s best players last season but this time around, he’s only scored three goals for Plymouth. But Parker wants him at Burnley in the coming weeks.

Romano reported: “Burnley have submitted an official bid to sign Morgan Whittaker from Plymouth Argyle. He was already on top of their list last summer.”

Burnley signing Whittaker would replace familiar Leeds face

Whittaker would be a real signal of intent from Burnley going into the second half of the season, a player that had a hand in 27 Championship goals last season for a Plymouth side that finished in 21st place.

A move to land the former Swansea man would see Parker bring in more competition on Burnley’s right flank and likely replace Jaidon Anthony. Last season’s Leeds loanee has started 22 Burnley league games.

But it is a move that should have Leeds looking over their shoulder. Whether Burnley find their bid is accepted remains to be seen, but the intent is there and that should at least have Leeds concerned.
