Leeds United and Burnley played out a predictable 0-0 draw at Turf Moor as the two sides cancelled each other out for much of the match, only producing one shot on target.

Leeds were still top of the Championship table going into the clash in Lancashire after Hull City beat Sheffield United 3-0. Meanwhile, Sunderland failed to beat struggling Plymouth Argyle on Saturday.

A win would have seen Leeds go six clear of third-placed Burnley and four ahead of Chris Wilder’s Blades but it was not to be. Burnley’s defensive record has been immense, conceding only nine goals this term.

Only four at Turf Moor, while Leeds boast the second-best defensive record and so it proved. A 0-0 draw in which Dan James produced the only shot on target, in the 88th minute as James Trafford tipped over.

Curtis Davies predicts where Leeds United will finish this season

So, Leeds remain top and two points ahead of Sheffield United, three in front of Burnley and five ahead of fourth-placed Sunderland. With 17 League games to play, Leeds are well-positioned to get promoted.

But Leeds fans will remember last season’s collapse at the business end of the season and fans will hope The Whites can get it wrapped up beforehand. Curtis Davies has backed Leeds to finish in the top two.

He told Sky Sports before Monday night’s draw between Leeds and Burnley at Turf Moor: “I do [Leeds favourites to go up]. I fancied Leeds after last year’s disappointment losing the play-offs.

“I didn’t think they would want that to happen again. I thought they would do everything to make sure they kept things in their own hands and finish in that top two,” Davies continued in his summary.

What Curtis Davies said about Sheffield United and Burnley

It is incredibly close at the top, with the Blades bringing in some excellent new signings in Jonjoe Kenny, Tom Cannon and Ben Brereton Diaz. They have signalled their intent to finish in the top two places.

Burnley have gone down the experienced route with Ashley Barnes and Jonjo Shelvey, while Burnley are also trying to sign Morgan Whittaker. Davies gave his verdict on their chances of automatic promotion.

“Sheffield United have been fantastic, they’ve had two points deducted as well. Recruitment has been fantastic. Burnley have been fantastic, but it is a different Burnley,” Davies added, on Sky Sports last night.

“Not the free-scoring Burnley we have come to expect and Sunderland keep answering all the questions. I don’t see anyone jumping into the top four, but I do see Leeds finishing in the top two,” he continued.

Next up for Leeds is a straightforward-looking home clash against Cardiff City at Elland Road on Saturday, before The Whites go to Frank Lampard’s improving Coventry City next Wednesday.
