The door is now wide open for Leeds United to swoop in for one of their reported January transfer targets, who’s free to leave his current club.
Leeds United enter 2025 on the back of a frustrating game against Blackburn Rovers on New Year’s Day, which has seen their lead at the top of the table close to three points.
Whites boss Daniel Farke watched on as Leeds United drew 1-1 with Blackburn, with Pascal Struijk scoring what looked like a winning goal in the 88th minute.
Whilst Leeds remain in a strong league position, the game at Elland Road on New Year’s Day has certainly highlighted the need for new blood at Leeds in January.
In the build up to the New Year, Leeds United have been linked with 19 new players. And it’s an array of defenders, midfielders, strikers, and even a couple of goalkeepers.
Defence though looks like an area where Leeds are particular light on, especially at centre-back where Struijk is linked with a move to Spurs.
Leeds United handed huge Ben Godfrey update by Fabrizio Romano
Ben Godfrey looks like he could be leaving Atalanta during the January transfer window, with the former Everton man having played just one Serie A game following £10million move from Everton in the summer.
Leeds United have been linked with Godfrey in the build up to January. Now, transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has revealed the latest on the 26-year-old’s situation in Italy.
Romano says Godfrey is free to leave the club, despite joining just last summer. Romano posted on X: “Former Everton defender Ben Godfrey can leave Atalanta in January as he’s no longer key for their project.
“Discussions to follow as Godfrey is not even in squad list for the Super Cup.”

Leeds United eyeing another centre-back from Europe as possible priority emerges
Farke hasn’t made clear where Leeds will look to bolster during the January window. But recent links to the likes of Godfrey suggest it could be at centre-back.
And recently, another defensive name has been mentioned in Borussia Monchengladbach’s Nico Elvedi, who played under Farke when he managed the German outfit.
It’s claimed that Leeds United are tracking Elvedi who also has interest from elsewhere, and who could also be available for £10million.
How much Atalanta want for Godfrey remains to be seen. But it’d be fair to assume they’d want to recoup the £10million they paid for him in the summer.
For Leeds, it’s an affordable deal, and Godfrey would certainly bolster a centre-back position currently light on numbers.
