‘They have asked’… David Ornstein says Leeds United are trying to sign ‘outstanding’ defender this month

Leeds United now have just six days to complete any remaining transfer business.

Leeds are in need of reinforcements before next Thursday’s deadline but are yet to make a single addition and the clock is ticking on their strategy of willing to be patient for the right players.

Though another creative attacker would be good, it is at the back where Leeds need to put much of their focus, both at full-back and central defence.

Leeds lost Archie Gray to injury in Wednesday’s 1-0 win over Norwich City, which has enhanced the need for a right-back. Pascal Struijk’s longer than expected recovery time, as well as Charlie Cresswell’s likely departure, also makes a new centre-back important.

One name who has been linked with a move to Leeds is Ben Godfrey and Athletic journalist David Ornstein has shared an update on Leeds’ pursuit of him in a question and answer session.

Ornstein shares Godfrey update

He said: “They have asked about Godfrey but are a long way off what it would take to convince Everton to do business. Godfrey is also open to playing abroad, so that will expand the options if he is to leave.”

Leeds are reportedly in talks over a loan deal with an obligation-to-buy for Godfrey but it would appear they are yet to get near the sort of money Everton are asking for.

At the same time, Everton are also said to be more interested in a full sale, with clubs from across Europe, including Genoa, set to provide Leeds with intense competition.

Godfrey is capable of playing in every position across the back four and would be the perfect signing for Leeds if they get it done, but it sounds like there is still plenty of work to do.

Godfrey has worked under former Leeds boss Daniel Farke before at Norwich City and he has spoken previously of what an ‘outstanding’ player he thinks he is.
