Leeds United now ‘actively’ looking to complete first summer signing, but they may have to wait

Leeds United left the majority of their summer transfer business until the closing stages of the window and they may be about to do the same this month.

Five of Leeds’ nine summer signings came in the final two weeks of the window as they remained patient to bring in their top targets, waiting for other dominos to fall in the market.

And with the January window now already a third of the way through, it has been another slow start at Elland Road, though they have lost two members of their first team squad.

Leeds made the shock decision to end Djed Spence’s season-long-loan from Spurs early last week, and now Luke Ayling is set to follow out of the exit door, with a move to Middlesbrough close.

That leaves Daniel Farke two right-backs short and so according to the Yorkshire Evening Post, they are now ‘actively’ looking to bring at least one full-back to the club, but may have to wait before their targets are freed up.

Before the window had even opened, Farke publicly admitted a left-back was on the agenda due to the injury problems both Junior Firpo and Sam Byram have faced this season.

Firpo missed the majority of the first half of the campaign, while Byram has limped off or missed six of the last seven Championship matches.

Given their recent struggles on the left, it makes it all the more surprising that they have decided to leave themselves short on the other side, though it is something they are looking to address.

Burnley’s Connor Roberts has been heavily linked with a move to Elland Road this month, while Nottingham Forest’s Neco Williams is also liked at the club.

However, for different reasons, both look in the plans of their current sides and so Leeds are again waiting for the dominos to fall before they make their move, and are willing to be patient.
