Peterborough owner now shares what he told Barry Fry immediately after Patrick Bamford’s FA Cup goal for Leeds

Patrick Bamford netted arguably the goal of the season for Leeds United earlier this month.

Leeds were facing Peterborough United in the third round of the FA Cup and with the game in the balance at 1-0, Bamford volleyed home an incredible goal to all but secure the Whites’ passage.

Such was the quality of Bamford’s strike, there were visible reactions of shock from his teammates in the celebration, while Archie Gray also told him in the changing rooms that it would win the ‘Puskas award’.

Peterborough goalkeeper Fynn Talley also shared a joke with him after the game, though owner Darragh MacAnthony has not necessarily seen the funny side on the latest episode of the Hard Truth Podcast.

He claims that he has had to block numerous accounts on Twitter who have been talking about the goal, while also sharing what he told Director of Football Barry Fry the moment the goal went in.

MacAnthony shares thoughts on Bamford goal

He said: “I said to Baz [Barry Fry] as soon as that goal went in, that’s all anyone is going to talk about for the next seven days. I’ve had to block so much on Twitter. Here’s the reality, for 10 minutes we weren’t in it.

“After 10 minutes we were the better team until after that goal was scored by Leeds from a set piece.
Our football was brilliant, we didn’t look out of place. Leeds being ruthless and they were a Premier League side, they scored just before half time.

“Then come out in the second half, start well, and they go long, Bamford does what he does and then at 2-0 it’s always a tall order. We probably had the four best chances of a game, and I mean sitters.”

With the money at stake for Peterborough getting to the next round, you can understand MacAnthony’s celebration, but sometimes you just have to accept a moment of class.

Posh manager Darren Ferguson hailed Bamford’s goal as ‘world class’, while former boxer Tony Bellew claimed it is the best goal he has ever seen.

Bamford scoring goals like that is only a good thing for Leeds as he often gets his goals in streaks. Since coming into the team, he is very much in one of them, having scored three in three.
