Patrick Bamford has already got Leeds United’s goal of the season award wrapped up already.
The 30-year-old scored one of Leeds‘ best goals in recent history during the 3-0 win at Peterborough United in the FA Cup on Sunday, which has won him plaudits from across the footballing world.
Posh boss Darren Ferguson hailed the strike as ‘world class’, while Tony Bellew claims it is the best goal he has ever seen. Pundits such as Alan Shearer and Gary Lineker have also handed him praise.
When the goal went in, several of Bamford’s teammates including Wilfried Gnonto, Archie Gray and Jaidon Anthony were all visibly blown away by what had just happened.
Even some of Peterborough’s players could only stand and admire and speaking on the latest episode of the BBC’s ‘My Mate’s A Footballer Podcast’, Bamford has revealed what the home side’s goalkeeper Fynn Talley told him at full-time.
Bamford shares what Posh goalkeeper said to him
He said: “When I shook his hand after he kind of smiled and said ‘well I couldn’t do anything about that’.
Imagine if the manager came in after the game and said ‘come on keeps, you have got to do better there’.”
Sunday was just Talley’s 14th ever professional appearance and it is unlikely he will ever have a better goal scored past him than that. He wasn’t ever going to get near it.
Leeds midfielder Gray is said to have told Bamford in the changing rooms after the game that it would win the Puskas award, such was the quality of it.
From Leeds’ perspective, this is only likely to increase Bamford’s confidence with it now his second goal in as many starts, having failed to find the net since April.
Bamford therefore deserves to keep his place in the starting XI for the trip to Cardiff City on Saturday, with Georginio Rutter once again just behind in the number 10 role.
