Patrick Bamford is earning rave reviews on social media for his goal during Leeds United’s 3-0 win over Peterborough United on Sunday – and Tony Bellew has made a huge claim about the strike.
Bamford, 30, started only his second game of the season on Sunday, in what was his 18th outing in total – and he slammed in his second in two games, a gorgeous goal from all of 25 yards, chest and volley.
A stunning strike. Not only to control what was a 50-yard pass from Ethan Ampadu – who also scored a brace on the day – but to then without hesitation, lash it into the back of the net with his left foot.
All from a striker that has looked lacking in confidence, bereft of ideas and before his goal in the win over Birmingham on New Year’s Day, had not scored since April 2023. A truly magnificent goal from him.
Peter Crouch was among those to respond to the goal. A player that scored a similar type of strike, his goal against Manchester City for Stoke. Everton fan and retired boxer Bellew made a very big claim.
Tony Bellew comments on Patrick Bamford’s stunner for Leeds
A huge claim. While it is a quite stupendous goal, there have surely been better goals since Argentine legend Diego Maradona ran past the whole England side before netting ‘the goal of the century’ in 1986.
Maradona’s goal was one that lives long in the memory, almost 40 years on – now in 2024. A moment that truly took your breath away – given the state of the pitch, and England players trying to foul him.
Nevertheless, Bamford’s goal will give him a huge boost of confidence and it is much needed for a striker that has not been at his best since the 2020-21 season. He must start against Cardiff City.
