The reaction to Patrick Bamford’s goal against Peterborough United continues to roll in and now, the striker himself has shared what teen Archie Gray did in the Leeds United dressing room afterwards.

Bamford‘s goal was majestic. It is being talked about as one of the goals of the season, and one of the best in FA Cup history. Tony Bellew reckons it is better than Diego Maradona’s ‘goal of the century’.

Perhaps just as importantly for Bamford, it is a huge shot of confidence into the vein of a striker that has shown in the past, he thrives off confidence. A streaky striker, that goes on runs when things are good.

And struggles, when the chips are down. The Bamford of 2020-21 would never have wanted that year to end. Last season, it could not end soon enough. Now, he has two in two – his only two starts of 23-24.

Speaking on his podcast My Mate’s A Footballer with Joe Wilkinson, Bamford shared how Gray excitedly told him in the Leeds dressing room after the 3-0 FA Cup win that he is in line for the Puskas award.

“He’s only 17, literally as soon as we come into the changing room and the manager’s finished talking and we’re sat down, he was like to me, he properly showed his age, he was like a kid so excited.

“He was like, ‘Oh my god, oh my god, you’re going to go to the Puscas Awards’. I was like, ‘What?’ and he was like, ‘That’s going to get nominated, I’m sure!’, I think he was more excited than me,” he said.

Now, Daniel Farke has a decision to make. With a clash against Cardiff coming this weekend, Farke has to choose whether to keep Bamford in the starting line-up after two in two, brimming with confidence.

Or, return to Joel Piroe who will be fresh after sitting out the last two matches. The Dutchman being reduced to the bench saw Georginio Rutter start as a 10 against Birmingham and it worked really well.

Albeit, against a struggling Birmingham side at Elland Road – a game which saw Wayne Rooney lose his job as manager. Surely, Farke sticks with Bamford and takes advantage of the striker’s big confidence.
