Many have suggested Patrick Bamford might have scored the goal of the season as Leeds cruised to a 3-0 win over Peterborough – and both Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer have applauded Bamford.

His second goal in two games, Bamford controlled a long ball from Ethan Ampadu – who netted a brace on the day – before lashing home a volley from all of 25 yards. An incredible goal, from an unlikely player.

Bamford has not been at his best for the best part of three years now, with injury preventing him from returning to the form we know he is capable of producing. But, Bamford has remained fit for a while now.

Peter Crouch simply described it as a “beauty”, a striker renowned for his goal for Stoke that flew past Joe Hart – chesting down, volleying. Tony Bellew compared it to Diego Maradona’s ‘goal of the century’.

Now, on their The Rest Is Football podcast, both Shearer and Lineker have applauded Bamford. They discussed how difficult his goal was to score – and compared it Alejandro Garnacho’s goal vs Everton.

Lineker began: “I can’t [explain Bamford’s goal]. It’s way too far out for me.” Shearer replied: “Absolutely magnificent wasn’t it. The technique, the touch and then the execution. What a strike. Unbelievable.

“Goal of the weekend. Maybe, goal of the season,” Shearer added. Lineker said: “Beauty. Different to Garnacho’s. I couldn’t score either. Garnacho’s is doable, it’s more the spectacular, both goals brilliant.”

What a goal it was. Some have said it should be in line for the Puskas award at the end of the year but of course, there is a lot between now and then. But it will surely be a consideration for the award, then.

But more importantly for Bamford, and for Leeds, it is a shot of confidence in the arm for the one-time England star – just when he needed it. He’s gone from struggling to start, to scoring two goals in two.

You’d imagine, at this juncture, that Bamford will start come the weekend when Leeds go to Wales to take on Cardiff City. Leeds will be looking to beat the Bluebirds, after drawing 2-2 on the opening day.
