Leeds United have been getting to work on tying some of their youngsters to new long-term contracts this month.
Archie Gray was the first to put pen-to-paper on an extension, agreeing a new four-and-a-half-year deal to keep him at Elland Road until 2028. His original deal had just 18 months left.
Mateo Joseph then followed him last week with a contract for the same time period with Daniel Farke having used him on a number of occasions off the bench in the last few weeks.
And speaking in his pre-Norwich City press conference, Farke has hinted that another of Leeds’ young talents is about to become the third player to sign a new deal.
While insisting he will only discuss ‘business’ when it’s done, Farke was asked directly about reports Willy Gnonto is set to sign a new deal, with his response hinting it may not be far away.
Farke hints at Gnonto new deal
He said: “We want to keep our best players with highest potential. It’s definitely one of our main areas, when we have players when we’re convinced, that we are highly tempted to do something but we will only speak about business when it’s done.”
It was reported yesterday that Leeds are now increasingly confident of agreeing a new deal with Gnonto after months of uncertainty surrounding his future.
Gnonto still had three-and-a-half-years left on his original deal at Elland Road but Leeds have long been looking to tie him to new and improved terms.
The 20-year-old had been keen to leave Leeds in the summer after relegation but swiftly apologised to Angus Kinnear and Farke, which allowed him to be reintegrated back into the squad.
Gnonto is regarded as a ‘special’ talent and while he has not necessarily showcased that this season, hopefully this new deal can be what he needs to really get going again.
