Leeds United are still yet to make any progress on a potential new contract for Wilfried Gnonto.
That is according to Phil Hay of the Athletic, who reported this morning that the possibility of a deal has ‘not got off the ground yet’, amid reports from Italy Gnonto wants to leave.
Following relegation, Gnonto had looked to force through an exit from Leeds in the summer by refusing to play, and then handing in a transfer request just hours before a match with West Brom.
Gnonto then apologised to both Angus Kinnear and Daniel Farke before then being reintroduced back into the fold, but minutes have been difficult as of late following his injury and the form of others.
That has prompted the Italian media to suggest Gnonto is ‘ready to say goodbye’ to Leeds in January, though the 20-year-old personally laughed off those reports on Instagram this week.
Hay says Leeds yet to progress on Gnonto deal
As per Hay, there was ‘quiet hope’ at Leeds that Gnonto would sign a new contract in order to ‘smooth the waters’ following his summer ordeal.
That said, it would not put Leeds in a bad position come January as Gnonto would still have three-and-a-half-years left on his current contract, meaning they can set an asking price similar to that of the summer.
Leeds did everything possible to ensure Gnonto stayed amid interest from Everton, with his form at times in the Premier League last season suggesting he has the quality to rip up the Championship.
Don Goodman hailed Gnonto, Georginio Rutter and Joel Piroe as ‘brilliant’ and ‘too good for the Championship’ on Sky Sports News back on September 26 (10.42am).
Leeds will be hoping Gnonto can show that in the coming weeks and months, as well as looking to make progress on potentially signing a new deal.
