Junior Firpo is in regular contact with former teammates at Real Betis but has not asked to leave Leeds United in January.

Firpo has been heavily linked with a return to Betis ahead of the January window. An initial loan deal with an option-to-buy has been touted.

Some reports from Spain have indicated that Firpo is keen on leaving Elland Road next month having failed to secure an exit in the summer, which had initially been expected.

However, according to Estadio Deportivo, reports suggesting he is wanting a Leeds exit are wide of the mark, despite the fact Firpo regularly speaks to ‘former colleagues and bosses’ at Betis.

Betis is where Firpo played the best football of his career and would allow him to link up again with former Leeds teammate Marc Roca, but if it is to happen, there is a long way to go yet.

Leeds need Firpo fit

Having missed the first three months of the season through injury, Firpo is back in the treatment room after picking up a hamstring injury in the recent win over Swansea City.

However, Daniel Farke confirmed yesterday that Firpo is closing in on a return to training and despite his form since moving to the club, Leeds need him back.

Sam Byram is expected to be out until the New Year after picking up a hamstring injury of his own at the weekend, leaving Leeds without a recognised left-back at the moment.

Whatever the truth is regarding Firpo’s future ahead of January, Leeds need him back in the short-term so Farke at least has some sort of natural option in that position.

Leeds are likely to sign a new left-back in January regardless of whether Firpo leaves or not, meaning any focus on his future should be parked up for now.
