Nail in the coffin for Leeds United as deadline day deal for Premier League star is all but ruled out

Fabrizio Romano is the go-to source for football transfers. And unfortunately for Leeds United fans, he’s just dealt the club a somewhat veiled transfer blow.

More and more names are being linked with Leeds United as the 11pm February 3rd transfer deadline approaches. But still, we’re not seeing anyone really come close to making the switch to Elland Road.

It seems like names are linked, only to be quickly linked more closely with other clubs. What Daniel Farke and his recruitment team are doing behind the scenes remains to be seen, but they’re not making anything happen

Although Farke said Leeds would be quiet in January, it’s clear that they’ve been working on late deals with recent reports that Leeds United had bid to sign Cameron Archer on loan from Southampton.

That was hastily rejected though Leeds are expected to return. Another name linked of late is Matt Targett at Newcastle United. But it looks like he’ll be staying at Newcastle United.

Fabrizio Romano confirms Lloyd Kelly move to Juventus

Recent reports had claimed that Leeds United were set to sign Targett. The news came out of the blue but was met with a positive response from Leeds fans; many of whom just want to see the club make at least one signing by now.

But it was understood that Newcastle United only wanted to offload one defender before the deadline: Targett or Lloyd Kelly. Kelly’s loan-to-buy deal at Juventus picked up quicker than Targett’s move to Newcastle.

Now, journalist Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Kelly to Juventus is agreed and that the Englishman is hearing to Turin now to undergo his medical tests. That, in turn, keeps Targett at St James’ Park until the summer.

Writing was on the wall for Leeds United and Matt Targett

As quickly as Targett’s move to Elland Road has come about, it’s now been denied. Even before Romano gave Kelly to Juventus the ‘here we go’, Watford has a bid rejected for Targett.

That indicated Newcastle’s intentions to keep Targett, no doubt because they knew Kelly would go on to seal a move to Juventus which he all but has by this point.

For Farke, attentions may rapidly turn to other targets or even to other positions. He may now be focused on signing whoever he can, given it’s become so late in the January transfer window.
