Newcastle United defender Matt Targett could potentially be Leeds United’s first signing of the January transfer window and here is everything you need to know about him.

It’s been a quiet January transfer window for Leeds United, with Joe Gelhardt’s loan move to Hull City the only significant piece of business so far.

Daniel Farke said ahead of the window he was satisfied with his squad but Leeds have seemingly looked into recruiting in defence and attacking midfield. With little success.

Playmaker targets Emi Buendia and Louie Barry joined Bayer Leverkusen and Hull, respectively, on loan instead.

Meanwhile, there has been little movement in the chase for centre-back Nico Elvedi after Pascal Struijk’s injury proved not as bad as first feared.

However, versatile left-back Matt Targett appears to be target for the club ahead of transfer deadline day.

Here’s all you need to know about him.

Matt Targett to Leeds United transfer rumours

Farke recently hinted that a new signing was imminent and that might be Newcastle defender Targett.

Leeds are well-stocked at left-back with Junior Firpo and Sam Byram but both have had injury issues and Targett would bring extra cover and a wealth of experience to the busy run-in.

Firpo is also out of contract in the summer and is looking likely to leave on a free.

Reports earlier this week claimed Leeds had made an enquiry to sign Targett and the move appeaed to have gathered pace.

One reports suggested Leeds could announce Targett before the weekend and were closing in on a permanent transfer.

However, contrasting reports from, Graham Smyth of the Yorkshire Evening Post claimed the links have left people at Leeds in utter ‘bafflement’ and that the club is not expected to make a move for Targett.
