Leeds United’s hope of signing £100k-a-week star on a free is over as Tottenham make key decision

With Leeds United pretty much confirmed as a Premier League club for the 2025-26 season, work will be being done behind the scenes to give Daniel Farke’s side the best chance of survival.

Leeds are five points clear of third-placed Sheffield United with three games to play. If Sheffield United are going to break into the top two, it is likely to be at the expense of Burnley given they play on Monday.

Work then will be being done upstairs at Elland Road to give Farke the best squad possible, capable of survival in England’s top tier. The 49ers want to make six signings, including a goalkeeper and a striker.

It is also believed a centre-back and a left-back will be on Farke’s radar, given Max Wober is expected to leave and Junior Firpo’s contract ends in June. Leeds need two or three players in this area of the pitch.

Leeds were ‘pushing hard’ to sign Tottenham’s Ben Davies

Back in January, Leeds were ‘pushing hard’ to sign Ben Davies from Tottenham. A player who is close to Joe Rodon, given their time together at Spurs and with the Wales National Team – who is also versatile.

As his career has grown older, Davies has been used as a left-sided centre-back though naturally is a left-back. Currently, the £100k-a-week star is out of contract at Tottenham, much like Firpo is at Elland Road.

There has always been the opportunity for Tottenham to trigger an extension but with Davies hardly first choice in North London, it was unclear if Spurs were going to do that and keep Davies around again.

Tottenham make Ben Davies decision amid Leeds interest

With Tottenham’s injury list extensive, the club have had to bring in fringe players like Davies and Archie Gray to fill the gaps. Indeed, Gray has been tasked with playing as a centre-back for large part of 24-25.

Davies has caught the eye once again with his passionate performances, his last-ditch blocking and his leadership at Spurs. The Athletic say that Spurs will trigger his contract extension to keep him next year.

It ends any chance Leeds have of signing the 93-time Wales defender this summer, with the potential of a free transfer on the cards. Instead, Leeds will have to pursue other targets in the coming weeks.
