Leeds United are once again being heavily linked with a move for Sheffield United playmaker Gustavo Hamer.

The summer transfer window is just around the corner and Leeds United are gearing up for a big one as they prepare for their return to the Premier League.

Daniel Farke wants to strengthen his squad in several key areas in his quest to prove he is capable of managing in the top flight.

A playmaker is at the top of the manager’s wishlist after Brenden Aaronson struggled to be a creative force in the Championship, let alone the Premier League.

Leeds have already been linked with several options but the strongest rumours surround Gustavo Hamer.

Leeds have long been interested in Hamer and Sheffield United’s failure to get promoted means he will be up for grabs this summer.

While lots of Leeds fans are buzzing about the Hamer rumour, others have questioned whether he is good enough to keep Leeds up after going down with the Blades in 2024.

The praise he received from Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca two years ago certainly suggests he is, however.

Enzo Maresca called Gus Hamer the Championship’s best player

Speaking when he was Leicester City manager after his side defeated Hamer’s Coventry City 2-1 in August 2023, Maresca heaped praise on the Dutchman.

“I think Hamer is probably one of the best in the Championship,” the now Chelsea boss said, via Leeds Live.

“Yeah, yeah, absolutely, I know him from before.

“I was working last year but at the same time when you enjoy football, you watch all the competition and all of the good players, and he’s one of the… probably the best player in the Championship.”

Leeds were keen on Hamer before he chose Sheffield United and were strongly linked with him last summer after signing Jayden Bogle from the Blades.

Now it appears Leeds may try and repeat their Bogle trick and sign Hamer from their Yorkshire rivals.

However, reports suggest that Angus Kinnear’s Everton also want Hamer.

What Chris Wilder has said about Gustavo Hamer transfer

It has been a great past week for Leeds United fans, who got to sit back and relax as two of their biggest rivals lost massive finals.

Manchester United lost the Europa League final to Archie Gray’s Tottenham Hotspur, while Sheffield United lost the Play-off final to Sunderland in heartbreaking fashion.

After the last gasp defeat, Chris Wilder was asked about potential Sheffield United exits this summer, including Hamer and Michael Cooper.

He told the Sheffield Star: “As you can imagine, I’ve not thought about futures – personally, or from a player point of view – being an hour and a half after an incredibly low point of everybody’s careers, really.

“The players will be incredibly hurting, the supporters will be, the coaching staff will be. But it is what it is, and we’re going to have to deal with it.”
