It came as a surprise when reports emerged in the last few days claiming Willy Gnonto is close to signing a new contract at Elland Road – and now, details of that new contract have come to light.

Gnonto, 20, has of course endured a frustrating campaign. Some of it is his own doing, refusing to play in August for three games against Birmingham City, Shrewsbury Town and West Bromwich Albion.

He’s struggling to start, now. Dan James scored again on Sunday in the win over Preston, Crysencio Summerville has probably been our best player this season – alongside fan favourite Georginio Rutter.

West Ham, Fulham, Lazio, Roma and Fiorentina have all been linked of late. But then, reports said that Gnonto is closing in on a new deal at Elland Road – despite having a contract until the summer of 2027.

Team Talk now report details of that new deal. They claim that Gnonto has been offered a deal that will see him extend his stay at Leeds by a year until 2028, and that he would be given a ‘significant pay rise’.

Details of new Willy Gnonto contract emerge as Leeds make offer

Gnonto is a top, top talent and Leeds should be fighting to keep hold of the Italy star even if he is not starting at the moment. Some may question why he is getting a new deal – or even an improved wage.

But it must also be remembered that he is still only 20 and there is every chance that he comes back in and proves once again, why he was one of the best young players in the Premier League last season.

However, he is going to have to keep waiting with James and Summerville on fire at the moment. On Wednesday night, he could get a chance as Leeds play host to Daniel Farke’s old side Norwich City.
