Leeds United’s pursuit of a striker has led the club to be linked with many names during the January window but one of those could be about to become a teammate of Joe Gelhardt.

The 22-year-old has impressed in his early days at Hull, playing a key role in their 3-0 win over Sheffield United on Friday night. But Gelhardt’s move to Hull has opened up the need for a striker at Elland Road.

That, and Patrick Bamford being sidelined for another couple of weeks due to his hamstring injury. The Whites now only have Joel Piroe and Mateo Joseph to choose from, neither have really hit the heights.

Many are of the opinion that if Leeds are to go and secure promotion, then Daniel Farke could do with another striker. Farke has outlined that he would like three positions strengthened and a striker is one.

Leeds United set to miss out to Hull City in striker race

Leeds have been linked with a number of different strikers, like Israel star Dor Turgeman and Mergim Berisha. However, Berisha is off to Augsburg and Leeds were even touted to sign Kelechi Iheanacho.

But Graham Smyth has denied any value in reports Leeds are signing Iheanacho. Another, in Aston Villa talent Louie Barry, has been linked with a move to Leeds but Darren Witcoop has an update on Barry.

It appears Leeds target Barry will be joining Gelhardt at Hull: “Hull City are confident they have won the race to sign in-demand Aston Villa winger Louie Barry on loan.”

What could Leeds do in the final days of January window?

Of the three positions outlined by Farke that Leeds need, a striker is the lesser of the three. Indeed, Leeds need an attacking midfielder so much more with Emi Buendia the priority target for the club this month.

Brenden Aaronson has been inconsistent despite his numbers and has started 26 Championship games in a row. His durability is astounding, but his end product often leaves Leeds fans somewhat frustrated.

At centre-back, Leeds could also do with a new signing. Ethan Ampadu continues to cover Pascal Struijk but Farke made it clear Ampadu is not a long-term solution in defence, alongside Wales star Joe Rodon.

Struijk is back in training next week as Farke confirmed his hamstring injury is not a serious one. It lessens the need for a centre-back, but the requirement for competition at no.10 remains absolutely paramount.
