Leeds United under Daniel Farke have certainly shown a trend of targeting players across multiple transfer windows, with several long-term targets at Elland Road.

Perhaps that sentiment is best summarised with the pursuit of Sean Longstaff at Leeds United.

Stretching as far back as the Championship play-off final which Leeds lost to Southampton in 2024, reports linked Longstaff with a move to Leeds United.

Then in January this year and going into this summer transfer window, where it looks like Daniel Farke has finally got his man.

Reports this week revealed how Leeds United have agreed a deal for Longstaff after a bit of back and forth with Newcastle United, with a £15million fee rumoured to have been agreed upon.

But Longstaff isn’t the only player who has been linked on and off with a move to Leeds across several transfer windows: others include James McAtee, Emi Buendia, Gustavo Hamer, and one Josh Sargent.

Josh Sargent closes in on big money transfer amid Leeds United rumours

Farke was the one who brought Sargent to England in 2021 He signed the USMNT man from Werder Bremen but it’s been across the last two seasons that the 25-year-old has really shone, scoring 15 goals and assisting five more in just 32 Championship appearances last time round.

Reports have revealed how Leeds United have a strong interest in Sargent this summer, as they have done for several months now. But Sargent seems to be nearing a return to Germany, this time with Wolfsburg who have reportedly agreed a €16million (£13.88million) deal for the Norwich City man.

German outlet Wolfsburger Allgemeine have revealed the news, saying that the player is close to returning to Germany and completing his move to Wolfsburg, ending any Leeds United hopes of signing the striker.

Who is Leeds United’s top striker target right now?

Missing out on Sargent may even come as good news for Leeds fans. Ever since he was linked, Leeds United fans said they didn’t want Sargent to sign, citing his poor Premier League record as the main reason.

But it remains clear that Farke needs at least one more striker bringing in this summer, ideally one with Premier League credentials, with Lukas Nmecha the only attacking signing so far this summer.

Right now though, striker links are few and far between.

For a while it looked like Callum Wilson was set to join Leeds United but links to the released Newcastle United man have gone somewhat cold, as have links to Dominic Calvert-Lewin who’s left Everton.

Recent reports though have revealed how Leeds United are interested in a loan deal for Gonzalo Garcia at Real Madrid: the 21-year-old was the joint-top scorer in the Club World Cup with Madrid this summer, scoring four in six.

But a main striker target remains unclear for Leeds United. It may well have been Sargent.
