Burnley join Leeds United’s other two promotion rivals in £10m race as Nick Hammond twiddles his thumbs

The race to sign a Championship goal-getter is hotting up with three of the four clubs involved in the race for automatic promotion race now interested – but Leeds United are the odd one out.

Daniel Farke has hinted that Leeds could need a striker. Joe Gelhardt’s move to Hull City has now been completed, with Nick Hammond agreeing a loan for Gelhardt that does not include a permanent clause.

That leaves Leeds with three strikers available. Joel Piroe remains first choice at Elland Road having a hand in 15 goals and assists this season, while Mateo Joseph is seen as a talent with huge potential at Leeds.

But while Leeds have not been linked with Leicester City’s Tom Cannon, it appears The Whites’ promotion rivals are. Sunderland and Sheffield United had already been linked with a move to sign the Leicester ace.

Burnley now join Tom Cannon race as Leicester City recall striker

The 22-year-old striker has impressed during the first half of the season for Stoke City, scoring nine goals in 22 appearances. That included Cannon scoring four goals in a 6-1 win against Portsmouth in October.

Leicester have now recalled Cannon from Stoke given the interest in him. Sunderland and Sheffield United were leading the way for Cannon and now, The Mail’s Sami Mokbel reports Burnley have joined the race.

“Burnley enter the race for Leicester striker Tom Cannon. Foxes looking to cash in after recall from loan at Stoke. Bids around £10m. Everton also in the hunt, along with Sunderland and Sheffield United,” he said.

Rewind 18 months ago, and Leeds were interested in Cannon after his impressive loan stint at Preston. He returned to Everton, before completing a permanent move to Leicester where he suffered injury issues.

So, it begs the question that given Farke wants to sign a striker with Bamford injured and Gelhardt loaned to Hull, why are Leeds not interested in Cannon again? Especially, with three promotion rivals after him.

Perhaps, Leeds are one of the clubs interested in signing Cannon. But that has not yet been reported in the January window rumour mill, but it makes obvious sense that Leeds should be eyeing a move for him.
