Has any footballer in recent memory changed the opinion of the Leeds United supporters quite as dramatically as Junior Firpo?
When Fabrizio Romano reported during the summer of 2023 that the former Barcelona left-back was expected to leave Leeds before the close of that year’s transfer window, the reaction from many with a West Yorkshire postcode was less of a tear-jerking ‘goodbye’ and more a dismissive ‘good riddance’.
Perhaps that was just the pain of relegation talking.
But with Junior Firpo a regular in a backline breached 78 times en route to the Championship, the Dominican international’s defensive deficiencies had long since started to grate on those who saw Marcelo Bielsa’s kingdom crumble thanks to series of calamitous mistakes at the wrong end of the pitch.
Now, as former Chelsea striker Tony Cascarino explained a few weeks ago, there are still major doubts about Junior Firpo’s Premier League potential.
Can a man who played more like a wide forward than a full-back under Daniel Farke this season – largely freed up from defensive responsibilities in a dominant Leeds side with the best possession numbers in the division – be relied upon to hold his own defensively against far more ruthless opposition?

Junior Firpo future uncertain amid Real Betis links with Leeds United ace
Firpo, like many in Farke’s promotion-securing squad, will have their pros weighed up against their cons in the coming weeks as Leeds draw up their summer plans.
But, while the former Spain Under-21 ace still has his doubters, the Leeds fans who wanted Firpo out back in 2023 may now be ready to go to war in pursuit of a new contract two years on.
Talk about a shift of opinion.
Firpo’s deal expires at the end of July. As such, the £13 million acquisition from the Camp Nou will be permitted to leave on a free transfer as things stand.
Real Betis have been tipped to bring Junior Firpo back to the club where he started his career throughout much of the last 12 months or so. Leeds’ number three also changed agents recently. Usually a tell-tale sign that a change of scenery is on the cards.
But, according to new claims coming out of Spain this week, Real Betis are far from putting all their eggs in the Junior Firpo basket.
Real Betis reportedly hold talks with Barcelona’s Alex Valle
Manuel Pellegrini’s side have been linked with Aston Villa’s Alex Moreno already. Another former Los Verdiblancos favourite currently out of favour on loan at Nottingham Forest.
Marca, meanwhile, now claim that Real Betis have added Barcelona youngster Alex Valle to their left-back shortlist.
Valle has a £5 million release clause in his Blaugrana contract. And while Firpo would not cost a penny in transfer fees, Valle is a decade his junior and would presumably be a lot more affordable wage-wise.
Alex Valle spent the second half of the 2024/25 campaign on loan at Como following a brief spell in Scotland with Celtic. Como – their manager Cesc Fabregas has been linked with the Leeds job this week, funnily enough – are reportedly determined to land the La Masia graduate on a permanent deal.
Other reports claim that Betis have already held discussions with Alex Valle’s representatives. The Andalusian outfit believe he is the perfect fit for their sporting strategy, though where this leaves Junior Firpo is anyone’s guess.
Interestingly, Real Betis signed both Marc Roca and Diego Llorente from Leeds last summer. Firpo represents their fourth assault on The Whites’ roster. Betis made a £10 million bid for Mateo Joseph in January too.
