£8.5m player who Leeds United wanted to sign in January has just done Daniel Farke a big favour

Leeds United were linked with a number of players during the January who did not end up making the move to Elland Road.

The Whites’ only signing of the window was Burnley right-back Connor Roberts, who joined on loan for the rest of the season on deadline day, though is still waiting for his full debut.

Elsewhere, a new creative attacker and centre-back were also on the agenda and despite interest in a few different players over the course of the month, Leeds stuck with what they have in the final third.

One of the names who falls under that category is Fabio Carvalho, who opted for a move to Hull City over Leeds and other clubs due to the guarantee of game time at the Tigers.

And while Leeds will have been disappointed to miss out, Carvalho has just done Leeds a big favour in the battle for automatic promotion, by scoring the winner over Southampton last night.

Carvalho does Leeds favour with goal vs Saints

Carvalho has, perhaps, not hit the ground running in the Championship as many would’ve expected, but his goal on Tuesday was huge for a number of clubs.

Not only did it cement City’s position in the top six, but it also meant Southampton were unable to use their game in hand to climb above Leeds. In fact, they actually fell to fourth after Ipswich Town’s win.

Southampton actually ended up being beaten 2-1 on the night by Liam Rosenior’s side, and it was Carvalho’s goal which ultimately proved decisive in separating the teams.

Daniel Farke had been pushing to sign the £8.5 million youngster last month and despite the disappointment of not signing him, he will take solace from yesterday.

Thankfully Leeds have had many other attackers step up to the plate in the last few weeks, including Willy Gnonto, who perhaps would not have had the chance to impress like this, had Carvalho been signed.
