The real reason why Leeds United were put off signing Fabio Carvalho from Liverpool

Leeds United were among a host of clubs keen on signing Fabio Carvalho on loan from Liverpool.

Carvalho had spent the first half of the season at Red Bull Leipzig but was recalled early by the Reds due to a lack of game time, which caught the attention of several sides.

Leeds, Southampton and Premier League outfit Wolverhampton Wanderers were said to be pushing strongly for Carvalho, but in the end he made the shock move to Hull City.

Liverpool’s priority for Carvalho for the second half of the season was to ensure that he played regular football, and so seemingly decided that the Tigers would be the best place to do that.

And now according to Leeds Live, Leeds opted against really pursuing a loan deal for the 21-year-old as they did not want to agree to a contract which guaranteed playing time.

Leeds have arguably the best set of attacking options in the Championship, with their first choice front four of Crysencio Summerville, Joel Piroe, Georginio Rutter and Dan James having been hailed as ‘unplayable’.

Pundits have also claimed that Leeds’ back-up attacking options Wilfried Gnonto, Jaidon Anthony and Patrick Bamford are Premier League standard.

While Carvalho would arguably get into Leeds’ best starting XI, they did not want to agree him playing every week due to the vast competition for places.

Carvalho would’ve undoubtedly been a superb signing for Leeds at this level but the reasoning behind their decision not to do so is reasonable.

What it does show is that Leeds are alert to potential deals that could become available this month and so hopefully between now and the end of the window, the squad is strengthened.
