Leeds United have just seen proof of why they were right not to sign 26-year-old on deadline day

Leeds United opted against bring in another attacker on transfer deadline day.

The Whites’ one and only signing came at right-back as they brought in Connor Roberts on loan from Burnley, though that did not stop them from being linked with bolstering their options at the front end of the pitch.

David Brooks was on Leeds’ radar until Southampton won the race to sign him, while Burnley’s Manuel Benson was also linked with a move to Elland Road.

In fact, Benson felt like a distinct possibility heading into deadline day, as manager Vincent Kompany left him out of his squad to face Manchester City the day before due to speculation on his future.

However, ultimately a move never materialised and Leeds never got that left-footed right-winger, but last night’s win over Plymouth Argyle may have just shown why they were right to do so.

Gelhardt shows what he can do on the right

Leeds are already blessed with arguably the best set of wingers in the league and Willy Gnonto’s recent return to form means anyone who came in, would’ve really struggled for game time.

Gnonto went off with a knock last night, though, and Joe Gelhardt was the man who came onto replace him on the right, and looked somewhere close to his old self again.

Gelhardt has really struggled for game time this season but Daniel Farke was adamant he wanted to keep him in January. The Leeds boss was delighted with his performance.

The 21-year-old looked really sharp cutting in from that right-side onto his left-foot, and was so unlucky not to score the winner in added time of normal time as he saw a shot come crashing off the post.

With so many players ahead of him in those three positions behind the striker, it is unlikely Gelhardt will play too much in the coming months but there is no doubt he has shown Farke what he can do, and that Leeds made the right call not bringing in another attacker.
