‘At the end’… BBC pundit noticed something Leeds United’s players did at full-time of win last night

Leeds United made it five league wins in a row in 2024 with a 1-0 victory at Bristol City last night.

It is the first time in the club’s history Leeds have achieved this feat and in truth, it could have been a far more comfortable night had the likes of Crysencio Summerville and Georginio Rutter been more clinical in front of goal.

Willy Gnonto’s strike just two minutes into the second half was the only difference between the two sides, as he ensured he took his chance in the absence of the injured Dan James.

This was just Gnonto’s second goal of the season and first since August, with the 20-year-old having had a tough time in recent months. He’s only started three league matches in the last four months, and that has been reflected in his performances and confidence.

However, last night could well prove to be the turning point in his season and speaking on BBC Radio Leeds after the match, Jon Newsome says the rest of the squad’s reaction towards him at the end of the game was telling.

Newsome says Gnonto goal could be turning point

“I think his reaction and the other players’ reactions at the end of the game showed you where Willy Gnonto is in terms of his mentality, his feel, his love and his confidence.

“It was exactly what we needed and you could see with everyone’s reaction that they all knew what he needed. That might just be the little something that fires him up.”

Gnonto was encouraged to celebrate in front of the travelling away support by the rest of his teammates, but perhaps none more so than Rutter – who has often taken that role himself this season.

After the summer debacle surrounding his future, clearly it has taken time for Gnonto to rebuild his relationship with supporters, but last night was a big step in the right direction.

The 20-year-old is also seemingly on the verge of signing a new deal at Elland Road and that should also really help him motor for the rest of the season.
