Leeds United made very late move for 26-year-old attacker last night, it failed

Leeds United ended up bringing just one new player to the club in January but it could’ve been more.

The Whites waited right until the very last moment to announce the arrival of Connor Roberts from Burnley, a player they had been linked with ever since Djed Spence was sent back to Tottenham.

Right-back was the most important position for Leeds to strengthen on deadline day and they moved quickly to agree a deal for Roberts early in the day.

The 28-year-old was not the only Burnley player Leeds tried to sign yesterday, though, with Manuel Benson also having reportedly been on the radar.

According to Alan Nixon, Leeds and Middlesbrough both made late moves to sign him but were knocked back as Benson decided to remain at Turf Moor and fight for his place as he did not want to leave.

Benson rejected chance to leave Burnley

The door had very much looked open for Benson to seal a loan switch away from Burnley in the final hours of the window after he was left out of their squad completely for the defeat at Manchester City on Wednesday night.

Vincent Kompany admitted after that game his omission was down to transfer speculation, which led people to believe a deal was very much a possibility.

Benson would’ve been an excellent signing for Leeds as he would’ve provided that group of attacking players with a completely different type of option, particularly after Ian Poveda’s exit.

At the same time, however, it would’ve also been hard to guarantee regular game time for Benson at Elland Road due to the form of Leeds’ wingers Crysencio Summerville and Dan James.

Leeds will just be hoping they have done enough in the January window to sustain their automatic promotion push for the rest of the season.
