The decision to terminate Djed Spence’s loan early was the big talking point of Leeds United’s January transfer window.
His sudden exit from Elland Road was a shock to both supporters and parent club Tottenham, though the reasons behind why it happened have since come to light.
Spence is said to have had issues with his punctuality at Leeds which began to frustrate Daniel Farke. In fact, the 23-year-old was reportedly late to the meeting with Farke where he was about to be told he would be returning to Spurs.
Spurs, though, had no interest in keeping Spence for too long and were able to agree a loan with Genoa as part of the deal that took central defender Radu Dragusin the other way permanently.
Spence has made three appearances so far at the Serie A club and according to Football.London journalist Alasdair Gold – who was speaking on Last Word on Spurs – Genoa are ‘very happy’ with the way he has settled into the side.
Genoa happy with Spence
He said: “Djed Spence, they’ve done very well [to offload him]. There was no interest in him whatsoever when he came back from Leeds. So to get him involved in the Genoa deal for Dragusin…
To be fair to Djed Spence, he’s doing very well at Genoa. They’re very happy with him. He’s started terrifically. He’s played on the left, on the right, he’s doing everything they’re asking of him.”

Ultimately, with what has come to light since his exit from Leeds, it has turned out to be the right decision and Connor Roberts should be a good replacement on and off the pitch.
However, it is a shame it did not work out for him at Elland Road as clearly he is a talented player and he just needs to find the right environment to unlock that.
There have been a number of English players who have moved to Italy in recent seasons that have gone onto do well and perhaps Spence could be the next one too.
