Djed Spence did something incredible just before his Leeds United loan was terminated

The termination of Djed Spence’s loan was arguably the biggest story of Leeds United’s window.

The Whites shocked both supporters and those on the hierarchy at Tottenham Hotspur when the decision was made to end his time at Elland Road early, given that he had just started to settle in on the pitch.

Right-back had been in a position they looked secure in at the start of January, but both his and Luke Ayling’s departures meant Leeds were scrambling around for another until the very last moments of deadline day, when Connor Roberts was announced.

Spence has since gone on loan to Genoa after leaving Leeds, and the weeks in the wake of his exit have brought up numerous stories regarding his punctuality as the main reason Daniel Farke took the decision he did.

But in Phil Hay’s latest article for the Athletic, he has shared perhaps the most shocking, yet comedic part of how Spence’s loan spell came to an end.

Spence was late right until the end

It is said that Spence actually showed up late to the meeting with Farke where he was about to be told he would be going back to Tottenham early. You couldn’t write it.

It is such a shame that Spence could not get his off-the-pitch behaviour in order as there is no doubting the ability he has, particularly in the Championship.

The only period of his career in which everything seemed to click for Spence was at Nottingham Forest, which led him to being the best right-back in the division, as well as his move to Spurs.

Spence showed glimpses of what he can do at Leeds. He was excellent in the 4-0 demolition of Ipswich Town, and was also a shining light on his full debut for the club at Sunderland, despite defeat.

Hopefully Spence can use this time at Leeds as a learning curve going forward in his career, and a fresh start in Italy with Genoa should do him good.
