Djed Spence’s departure at Elland Road in January came as a surprise but numerous reports since have explained why the loan was cancelled – and now, Leeds have already signed a huge upgrade.

Spence only played seven times for Leeds before his loan was cancelled by Leeds at the beginning of January. He has since left Spurs on loan again, this time going to Serie A side Genoa until the summer.

Since his exit at Elland Road, Spence’s attitude has come under the microscope. It has been said that Spence turned up late to off-field club requirements, and disagreed with Daniel Farke about left-back.

On Friday morning, it was even reported that Spence showed up late to a meeting about his loan being cancelled. A brilliant player, but a player that clearly needs to sharpen up his attitude off the pitch.

Ridding themselves of Spence, Leeds finally replaced him by bringing in Connor Roberts on loan from Burnley until June He is a very adept player on the pitch, with Championship promotion under his belt.

Why Leeds’ Connor Roberts is a huge upgrade on Djed Spence

Like, Spence. Little to separate the duo in terms of quality. Roberts has had a hand in 35 goals in 173 games in the Championship. But, Roberts is a massive upgrade, the defender has already proven why.

He’s shown that he will offer Leeds so much more off the pitch, than Spence, in his comments during an interview with BBC Radio Leeds – after finally, Leeds confirmed his arrival from Burnley at Elland Road.

He said: “I just want to be here at this massive club and contribute in any way I can. If that’s playing games, coming off the bench or not coming on at all – I’ll always contribute. I’ve got a lot of experience.”

That in itself, is proof that while there isn’t much difference in footballing ability between Spence and Roberts, there is a huge gulf off of the pitch. Cutting Spence loose, and signing Roberts, is an upgrade.
