Djed Spence has returned to Tottenham Hotspur after his loan spell was cancelled by Leeds United earlier this month, and now it has been explained why the defender was forced to leave the Whites.
Spence, 23, managed just seven outings for Leeds during the first half of the season. It comes after a debut in the draw with Sheffield Wednesday, only to then pick up an injury – sidelined for three months.
He managed a further six outings. But of course, England U21 man Spence has now returned to Spurs – Leeds making the decision to cancel his temporary spell. He has moved to Italy, with Serie A side Genoa.
The decision to cancel his loan came as a surprise. Mainly because Leeds are lacking in defensive areas, and then the loss of Luke Ayling. But also because he was set to be one of our key players in 2023-24.
Now, a report from ESPN claims why Spence’s loan was cancelled by Leeds. It explains how Spence was often late, a disagreement with Daniel Farke over his position, and failed to meet off-field requirements.

“Sources said while he was polite around the training ground, there were again issues with timekeeping and a failure to fulfil off-field club requirements. A disagreement with Leeds boss Daniel Farke followed.
“Over his role in the team. Farke wanted Spence to cover at left-back. The player disagreed and shortly afterwards, Leeds activated a break clause in their loan agreement. Spurs were taken by surprise.”
Djed Spence’s return to Tottenham from Leeds now explained
A real shame that Spence had to return to Tottenham from Leeds, given the quality of the player. The one that we saw shine under Steve Cooper at Forest. Maybe, Cooper could’ve got the best out of him.
Now, Leeds move on and will need to bring in replacements for Ayling and Spence. Plenty have been linked but it might not be until towards the end of the window that we finally see more incomings.
