Not many saw it coming but on Thursday, Leeds United confirmed that Djed Spence’s loan had been cut short at the halfway stage, despite Spence impressing of late – and Phil Hay has a new update.

The 23-year-old joined Leeds on loan from Tottenham in the summer after a difficult 2022-23. The star moved to Spurs in the summer of 2022 after starring on loan at Nottingham Forest, winning promotion.

But he struggled at Spurs and was sent on loan to Rennes, alongside Joe Rodon. He failed to impress and he has followed Rodon again, moving to Leeds from Spurs. After his debut, he picked up an injury.

It ruled Spence out for three months, from the start of September to the start of December. But, he won his place back in the side and made six successive Championship appearances – starting five of those.

But, on New Year’s Day he was left on the bench with Junior Firpo and Archie Gray starting. However, not many will have predicted Spence’s loan being cancelled. Hay now delivers an update on the loan.

Phil Hay delivers update as Djed Spence leaves Leeds United

He says that Leeds chose to cancel the loan, and not Tottenham. Perhaps suggesting that Leeds are freeing up a loan space, or wages to bring in another player. Strange, with Spence showing glimpses.

Sam Byram is injured, while Luke Ayling is being linked with Middlesbrough. Stuart Dallas remains on the sidelines. Surely, if Leeds are making the decision as Hay says, then it means a replacement is ready.

If not, then it seems a bit bizarre and perhaps, not the entire story is being told. Perhaps, we will find out more when Daniel Farke speaks to the media on Friday – ahead of Sunday’s clash against Peterborough.
