Reports emerged this week that Willy Gnonto could be about to sign a new deal at Leeds United but Fabrizio Romano has delivered an update – and claims that the Italian could still leave this month.
Gnonto, 20, has endured a frustrating season. Some of it, perhaps his own doing. After relegation, he refused not to play in three games during August – but Leeds refused a sale despite plenty of interest.
Since then, he has struggled to start. Just two starts in the Championship since October. Dan James and Cree Summerville have been on fire, out wide. But in a surprise twist, Gnonto could sign a new deal.
It is claimed that he is close to a new deal. Fulham and West Ham have been linked, while Lazio, Roma and Fiorentina could take him back to Italy for £13m. Now, Romano has given his take on the situation.
“I think the Gnonto situation is quite open. There is some interest, it’s true. At the moment there is still nothing imminent or close [with regards to a move]. We know it is never easy to agree with Leeds.
“So that’s why the situation remains open. But I think in general, Gnonto could be one of the names to watch in the final days and the final hours of the January transfer window,” Romano told Give Me Sport.

Daniel Farke was asked about Gnonto’s future and a potential new deal in his press conference this week ahead of Norwich on Wednesday night, and he suggested that there could be a contract soon.
But Romano, who possibly knows more about things from an Italian side in regards to Gnonto, feels like it could come right down to the wire for Gnonto. Perhaps, we won’t see a new deal until next month.
