Simon Grayson has given his thoughts on Illan Meslier’s season at Leeds United.
Leeds United ended the campaign in incredible fashion as Manor Solomon’s last-gasp winner at Plymouth secured the Championship title over Burnley on goal difference.
The parties that followed in Leeds will go down in history and the players who achieved the 100-point milestone will be forever remembered.
However, Illan Meslier might not be written into folklore quite as fondly.
Leeds only conceded a record-equalling (if Burnley hadn’t conceded just 16) goals all season but it should have been even less, given a significant portion came from Meslier’s mistakes.
Farke backed his goalkeeper throughout the season but was forced to drop him after two calamitous errors against Swansea City saw Leeds staring down the barrel of the Play-offs.
Yet, Simon Grayson believes the Frenchman still played a big role in the title triumph that shouldn’t be ‘underestimated.’

Simon Grayson praises Illan Meslier’s season
Speaking on LUTV’s coverage of the aftermath of Saturday’s historic victory, Grayson was sure to give credit to Meslier.
When asked if it was nice to see Meslier involved in the celebrations, the former Leeds boss replied: “Yeah, of course it is.
“Look, everyone will always remember the mistakes that goalkeepers make at any level, any football club, but he’s made some big saves in this season and that can not be underestimated.
“When games have been really tight and he’s made big saves and the team has gone on to win the games.
“Yes, he’s been highlighted for the mistakes and I think Daniel made the correct decision in dropping him when he did and Karl Darlow came in.
“Meslier’s played a big part in this as well and you can’t get away from that.”
Michael Bridges hails ‘incredible’ Karl Darlow
Karl Darlow was the man to replace Meslier and his introduction coincided with Leeds’ upturn in form.
The Welshman brought a calming competence to the back as Leeds won six and drew one of his seven Championship appearances. Darlow kept four clean sheets and conceded just three times.
Michael Bridges, also speaking on LUTV, hailed his crucial contribution.
Bridges said: “Another man that has lifted the trophy there, Karl Darlow, came in. He’s waited.
“He’s the man that’s had to play second fiddle to Meslier to push the first team goalkeeper, the first choice, waited for his opportunity and when he’s taken his opportunity towards the latter end of the season.
“He has been absolutely incredible to give that defensive unit stability once again when it was just looking a little bit frail.”
