The time is finally upon us: Leeds United take on Sheffield United at Bramall Lane in a battle between 1st and 2nd in the Championship.
As far as Championship fixtures go, this might just prove to be the best one of the season so far. If not then it’s certainly the one with the most riding on it with the winner set to give themselves a huge boost in the race for the title.
As things stand, Leeds United sit in 1st place of the table and Sheffield United in 2nd, with two points separating the two teams. Earlier in the season, Leeds United beat Sheffield United 2-0 at Elland Road, and Daniel Farke’s side now go into this one in good nick.
Not only are they unbeaten in 15, but last time out Leeds came from behind to beat Sunderland in what was another promotion crunch match, whilst Chris Wilder’s Blades beat Luton Town away from home.
There’ll be a lot of eyes on Bramall Lane on Monday night. Likewise, there’ll be a lot of eyes on whether or not Gustavo Hamer features for Sheffield United.

Sheffield United drop Gustavo Hamer hint ahead of Leeds United
Earlier in the month, Hamer picked up an injury at Sheffield United which has since put him in doubt to feature on Monday night. The 27-year-old was left out of the side that beat Luton and Wilder has since suggested that the Dutchman is 50/50 to play a part against Leeds on Monday.
So far this season, Leeds United transfer target Hamer has played 29 times in the Championship, scoring seven and assisting five more. Farke may well be preparing to face a Blades XI without Hamer, but the Blades seem to be doing all they can to confuse and muddle the Leeds preparation.
On Sunday, they posted a picture on social media of Hamer in training, seemingly suggesting that he’s fit enough to at least feature in the matchday squad.
What Gustavo Hamer has said about the promotion race
Speaking before the Luton Town game, Hamer gave his verdict on Leeds and Sheffield United and on whether or not the Blades can keep the pace in the race for promotion.
He said: “We did really well and you’ve seen how good we can be. It was class today. It [the promotion race] is tough, the top four are all doing well. But we have to look at ourselves and just keep winning.
“We’ve got Luton this weekend and then a massive one a week on Monday. We just have to keep winning our games and then it doesn’t matter what anyone else does.”
No doubt, a win for either side on Monday would be huge. And Sheffield United’s chances of a win will be greatly bolstered if they can welcome back Hamer. Likewise Leeds will stand a better chance if Hamer isn’t fit.
