The Championship served up another twist on Wednesday night as Sheffield United, Burnley and Sunderland all secured wins to close the gap on Leeds United, after The Whites’ 4-0 win at Watford.

Tuesday night saw Leeds demolish Watford. Earlier in the season, Leeds were questioned over their ability to win games away from home under Daniel Farke but that theory has entirely vanished in recent weeks.

Leeds were at their brilliant best on Tuesday night as Dan James netted a brace, while Joel Piroe and Manor Solomon got their names on the score sheet. It piled the pressure on their three promotion rivals.

But Sheffield United, Burnley and Sunderland all came through with flying colours on Wednesday night. The Blades perhaps pulling off the best win of the night, surpassing Middlesbrough with a 3-1 scoreline.

Gustavo Hamer suffers potential blow ahead of Leeds clash

The next couple of weeks will be enormous in shaping the race for the Championship title and a place in the top two. Leeds host Sunderland on Monday, and then Sheffield United at Bramall Lane a week later.

Gustavo Hamer could have followed Jayden Bogle and swapped the Blades for Leeds in the summer. But, Leeds saw a £13m bid for Hamer rejected and now, Hamer could be preparing to face Leeds this month.

However, he limped off the field of play against Boro on 70 minutes and Hamer says he felt the issue after just 20. He spoke about the issue after the game, unclear if he will be fit for Sheffield United’s next games.

“I was feeling it after 20 minutes. We’ve got a good medical team, they looked after me at half-time. I had to be a bit careful but, when adrenaline’s flowing you just want to go and go. Hopefully okay tomorrow.”

Gustavo Hamer has proved why Leeds wanted him this season

Leeds were keen to bring in Hamer to provide competition for Brenden Aaronson after Georginio Rutter left. But The Whites failed to nab his signature and ultimately, have failed to replace Rutter since his exit.

Aaronson has done well without ever really excelling, yet to show Leeds fans why he cost a huge £25m fee three years ago. But he has had a hand in 10 goals for Farke’s side during the 2024-25 campaign.

However, it is not hard to imagine how good Hamer might have been in this Leeds side had The Whites manager to get a deal over the line. No way, were Sheffield United ready to sell another player to Leeds.
