German newspaper Bild have reported that Leeds United defender Robin Koch can leave Elland Road on a free this summer – despite his contract expiring in 2024. Relegation has triggered a clause in the centre-back’s contract.
Koch, 26, was a mainstay throughout 2022-23 – arguably enjoying the best of his three seasons at Leeds. Of his 77 Leeds outings, 39 came just last season – managing 38 in his first two seasons. He started 36 of 38 league games.
But due to relegation, and Koch’s strong belief that he deserves to be playing in Germany’s senior squad – in which he has done eight times – he is more than likely to go. Now, that is even more likely if Bild’s report turns out true.
Indeed, the report states that a clause has been inserted into Koch’s contract that should Leeds be relegated, Koch would be allowed to go for absolutely nothing. Reiterating, it is not a small fee, but nothing. German clubs are keen.

A real blow. Of the players that are likely to go this summer, Koch is one of those – because of the length of time still on his deal. Leeds fans would have been expecting a fee for him. Perhaps, similar to the £13m spent to sign him.
So, to lose him on a free is a hammer blow. It means Leeds may have to sell one more big asset than they previously might have done in order to balance the books. Plenty will join Koch in the coming weeks and months in exiting.
Illan Meslier and Rodrigo have spoken about their future over the weekend. Crysencio Summerville has interest from Arne Slot’s Feyenoord and a meeting is said to have been held between Leeds and Betis today for lefty Marc Roca.
