Illan Meslier has told French outlet RMC Sport that his Leeds United future is “really complicated” with Premier League clubs said to be considering a move for the goalkeeper – who is currently with France’s Under-21 side.
Meslier, 23, endured a difficult season between the sticks for Leeds. A season that tailed off in terms of his form towards the end of the campaign, which saw his axe from the starting XI during Sam Allardyce’s last four games.
Leeds have suffered relegation to the Championship, but a takeover from the 49ers has finally been confirmed. Leeds can now look to appointing a new manager, sporting director and sorting out the future of the playing squad.
Meslier is likely to be seen as one member of the team that could be sold for a decent fee, bringing in some cash in order to reinvest in other areas of the team. Meslier gave a response on his future, describing it as “complicated”.
“It’s complicated. Really it’s complicated. When you get out of a situation that is ours – I don’t know if you’ve seen the coach – our club is in the process of being bought out by Saint Francisco 49ers,” Meslier told RMC Sport.
“So suddenly there are a lot of unknowns. So for the moment I have my contract until 2026. After that I will have to think about what is best for me whether that’s at Leeds United or another club,” the Frenchman continued.
Meslier future complicated, Premier League clubs considering move
Chelsea, Tottenham, Manchester United and others have been linked with Meslier. But his form towards the end of the season may put suitors off. Chelsea have options. Spurs are exploring other options and David De Gea may stay.
So, if Meslier does want to go – which perhaps, his lack of Instagram post since relegation may emphasise – then he may find it difficult to join a club in the Premier League that he feels is worthy of his quality. Maybe, a return home?
