Paraag Marathe finally details summer plans for Leeds United after promotion and addresses PSR concerns

With promotion and a Championship title in the bag for Leeds United, focus immediately switches to the summer and whether The 49ers can spend the cash necessary to keep Leeds up.

As is the way, Leeds have been linked with a plethora of potential signings. The club will certainly have plans in place, as new sporting director Adam Underwood gets thrown in at the deep end this summer.

Leeds need a goalkeeper. They need a centre-back, a possible replacement for Junior Firpo is he doesn’t stay and a central midfielder. A no.10, Manor Solomon or a new winger and certainly, a proven striker.

To improve this Leeds side, they could be players worth £20m-£30m each. Leeds then are going to have to exceed £100m, and that’s before the club even consider strengthening the depth of Daniel Farke’s side.

Paraag Marathe finally breaks silence as Leeds secure promotion

Chairman Paraag Marathe had spoken in a statement on the Leeds website – but it was a congratulatory post after promotion had been won. Now, the Leeds figurehead has been talking to The Financial Times.

The 2023-24 accounts show a loss of £61m, but doesn’t include the sales of Crysencio Summerville and Georginio Rutter, but it is unclear how much can be spent without breaking Profit & Sustainability Rules.

It seems Marathe is in the dark, too. But, speaking to FT, he made it clear that whatever Leeds can spend – they will do so. In a typical Americanism, Marathe assured fans he’ll spend the “very last penny” available.

“Whatever they will let us spend, we’ll spend. I can comfortably say that we are going to spend the very last penny that we can. I’m under no illusions that it’s going to be easy, there’s a widening gap,” he said.

Paraag Marathe outlines long-term Leeds United plan in interview

Marathe has not only been speaking about this summer, but sustaining Leeds as a Premier League side in years to come. Simply remaining in the Premier League for one year is not going to establish The Whites.

There needs to be a long-term plan and Marathe is aware of this. He tells the Financial Times that he is looking to do everything within Leeds’ financial power over the next three years, to establish the club.

“It’s [funding from RedBull and The 49ers] what we need to go full tilt for the next three years. With all due respect to the other clubs, I think we’re different. We have scale that nobody else has,” he added.

Regarding Farke’s future as manager, Marathe did not comment. The 49ers are said to be considering his future and Marathe recently declined to do an interview with Sky Sports after the win over Bristol City.

More fuel was added to the fire when Farke remained in the dugout following Manor Solomon’s winner against Plymouth on Saturday, with the German’s celebrations somewhat muted – unlike the players.
